Using FitShift

Resize a photo without cutting off the important part

Crop or add borders, understand pixel and file-size limits, and fix common FitShift export problems.

If a square crop cuts someone out of your photo, switch FitShift’s Mode from “Fill (center crop)” to “Fit (letterbox).” Fit keeps the whole picture and adds borders. You can choose their color with the Background control.

If you don’t want borders, stay in Fill and drag the crop frame to choose what stays in the picture. Zoom cuts out more of the original, not less.

What happens to a landscape photo in a square?

Suppose you start with a 4000 × 3000 landscape photo and need a 1080 × 1080 square. FitShift gives you a crop option and an option to fit the whole picture with padding.

A centered square crop takes a 3000 × 3000 piece of the original. You lose 500 pixels from each side before it’s resized. If someone is standing at the edge of the photo, that may be a problem.

Fitting the entire photo instead gives you a 1080 × 810 picture inside the square. The remaining 270 pixels become space above and below it. You keep everyone in the photo, but you get borders.

Check the preview before downloading. If neither version works, try another photo or a different shape if the destination allows it.

The dimensions are right, but the file is too big

1080 × 1080 describes the number of pixels. KB and MB describe how much space the file takes up. Two images with identical dimensions can have different file sizes: a detailed photograph and a plain background contain different amounts of information for the encoder to compress.

FitShift chooses JPG or PNG from the preset. It doesn’t have a format selector or a custom file-size control. A preset with a KB cap tries lower JPEG quality until it meets that cap. If it cannot, you get an error rather than a smaller image with the wrong dimensions.

A preset without a cap doesn’t check the destination’s upload limit. Look at the downloaded file’s size before uploading. If you need more compression controls, use a separate image editor or compressor. Renaming a PNG to end in .jpg does not convert it.

Why the download looks blurry

Start with the original photo if you have it, rather than a screenshot or a copy saved from a messaging app. Enlarging a 300 × 300 image to 1080 × 1080 gives you a larger file to display, but it cannot recover the missing detail.

A tight crop leaves fewer source pixels too. Try less zoom, or use Fit to keep more of the original. Inspect the downloaded image at its actual size; a small preview can hide blur and JPEG artifacts.

The banner looks right here but wrong after upload

FitShift shows the whole exported canvas. It doesn’t simulate every phone, TV, or profile layout. Those layouts may crop the edges or cover them with interface elements.

Keep essential text away from the edges, then check the platform’s own preview. For a YouTube banner, use YouTube’s safe-area guidance; its safe-area measurements depend on the canvas size. FitShift does not draw that overlay for you.

If the file won’t load or download

Use a JPG, PNG, or WebP image. FitShift doesn’t resize videos or export animated files. Inputs are limited to 50 MiB (52,428,800 bytes) and 100 million pixels; a device can run out of memory below those limits.

For a read or decode error, try opening the original in another image viewer and saving a new copy in a supported format. For an export error, try a smaller source copy or another current browser. Keep the original.

If FitShift reports that it cannot meet a government-photo file-size cap, don’t retouch your appearance or alter the background to force it through. Follow the agency’s current photo instructions or use a professional photo service. FitShift cannot certify acceptance.

When a download appears to be missing, check your browser’s downloads list. The tool has no saved-photo account to retrieve it from later. Return to FitShift.
